Sam Hughes
A humble poem to wood, brick, shadow, and light. Built in 1945 by Architect Art Brown, this home required a sensitive update while maintaining the original vision of Brown. Extreme care was used to pare down previous modifications to a simple balance of prominent historic aspects of the house with a modern sensibility. Renovations of historic homes are always intriguing to us as we enjoy honoring the sense of past and place of the previous owners who lived there while making necessary updates that address present-day realities. We appreciate this lineage and see owners of older homes as stewards for the future.
In making alterations and additions, our response was to reinforce a coherent vision for the design as a whole – creating moments of connection through shared spaces and materials. Original surfaces and features are the heavy texture of wood and brick, all strong honest materials that represent the original age of the home. other spaces that had been modified over time were reduced to clean concrete, wood, and crisp white. This approach delineates original from modified for a legible architectural renovation.
