Hazelbaker Rush is an internationally recognized architecture and design studio with a focus on creating modern objects, spaces, and experiences. We are a small, energized, creative studio based out of Tucson Arizona. Our Architectural ideas emerge from the understanding of place, history, context, and culture.  We place great importance on the habitation of spaces that we conceive - a process that is continually evolving to engage the client, the user, the artisan, and the environment. Good design lies in a realm of experienced things and their making.

In the pursuit of architecture, the evolution of a concept seldom manifests itself in a straight line. Architectural knowledge is not only created in the studio, it is gained in dialogue with the materials and construction techniques employed in each project. It is important to us to keep the line of thought from idea to realization so that it remains discernible when the project takes form. In every endeavor, we infuse a piece of ourselves within them. Creating an experience that embraces our memories, holds space for the future, and firmly grounds us in the present. We revel in the transformative alchemy that happens when creative and passionate people get together to create something special.

We pin up our ideas, take them down, converse, question, edit, refine, and explore new territory in our ideas and making.  We work closely with our clients to understand their needs, we ask questions, listen well, push toward boundaries and edges, are deliberate, and advocate for what is important, and we appreciate the complexity involved in constraints. Together we balance and complement each other’s skills and personalities, and the body of work they have created together over the past 24 years speaks to that strong collaboration.

  • Darci was drawn to the vast sky of the West from an early age and moved to New Mexico in 1995 to study architecture at the University of New Mexico. While in New Mexico she worked at the office of Antoine Predock Architect– where she learned to value the importance of place and tradition as tools in developing a process of design. She and Dale moved to Tucson in 2005, where she continued to pursue her focus on craft and culture of place, which still informs her work today. In addition to Practice, Darci has worked in the community for over a decade in the development of sustainable practices, recognizing the importance of reusing existing spaces, as well as, preserving and restoring the significant historical buildings in Tucson. She obtained her real estate license to combine her expertise in architecture, her appreciation for timeless design, and her passion for the preservation of the important spaces, neighborhoods, and communities that can be found throughout Tucson.

  • Dale studied Architecture at Auburn University, completing his design/build thesis at the Rural Studio in 2000 under the guidance of Samuel Mockbee, gaining a reinforced sense of social responsibility and compassion as a designer and a person.  This built thesis was exhibited as part of the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the subject of an award-winning independent documentary released in 2003. In 2005, he moved to Tucson, Arizona to be a part of the design team of Studio Rick Joy, working on several significant projects during his time there. Some of these contributions include – Amangiri Resort and Spa, Woodstock Vermont Farm and the Ventana Canyon House.
